Copyrights

I had never given much thought on the topic of copyrights in the classroom.  After our last class I have realized that many of my teachers have violated copyright laws in the past.  I believe that in our current age all people must be aware of the legality of their actions online, especially with the sharing of information/media.  In a society that is becoming more dependent on digital devices and the internet for creating and sharing information it is important to know how to protect your intellectual property and also protect yourself from violating copyright laws.  I felt that the activity we did in class was an effective way of teaching the various forms of copyright protections that are available.  In my future classroom I would encourage my students to be aware of the consequences of their actions online and I would seek to give them the knowledge and skills to prevent themselves from violating copyright laws.  It is important that students know how to properly credit authors in order to ensure their success in academic and professional endeavors.  Citing sources is a useful skill to practice in not only online endeavors but in writing academic papers.

  1. I think it is important to think about how you want to teach it. There are many different ways to teach the concept of copyright and I have done it different ways. Sometimes I have the students review some resources and take an online quiz. Other times I have given them different examples and they had to figure out what type of license it is.

  2. I think this is a great idea, especially when teaching students of high school age and younger. The main reason is because these students have grown up with this technology at their finger tips and when they enter the classroom and proceed to use others work copyright laws are definitely an issue. By demonstrating the laws and copyright licenses in various ways will effectively help more students better understand what it is they are able to use and under what conditions they can use it.

  3. I agree that many teachers today do not take copyright into consideration at all. I saw it when I was in school, still see it in school, and have seen it in the classes I have observed. Copyright infringement runs rampant in education. I really feel that teachers should have to take some kind of class where there become more aware of the copyright, that way, they can pass this information onto their students correctly as well as use it in their classrooms.
